A new bill is making its way through the Texas Legislature that could benefit renters who own certain breeds of dogs.
Texas House Bill 3798, proposed by Rep. Ina Minjarez, D-San Antonio, would require all public housing authorities in Texas to follow local ordinances and avoid restricting renters from bringing certain dog breeds with them.
This move would protect dog owners from breed discrimination when looking for a new place to live. “Having a pet-inclusive place to call home is essential for most Texans, but sadly, there isn’t enough pet-inclusive housing for renters.” Minjarez wrote in a Facebook post.
If the bill is passed the new rules would start on September 1, 2021, although they could go into effect immediately with a two-thirds vote in both the Texas House and Senate.
