Ballarat anorexia nervosa survivor Hannah White will walk 100 kilometres during October to raise money for life-changing research into treatment and prevention of mental illness. The 24-year-old, who has been struggling with the psychological illness for eight years, has joined the Black Dog Institute’s one foot forward virtual walking event. It is being held in October, which is mental health month. Ms White’s sister, Abbey White, will join her in walking the 100 kilometres as well as her father, with support from her step-mother and step-sister. “My sister Abbey has been along this journey with me, alongside my family within my household,” Ms White said. “So this October, Abbey and I will be walking for this cause that brings awareness and support for mental health and suicide, two things that for me touched my life personally and a cause I hold close to my heart.” “For the month of October, we will be walking 100 kilometres to raise awareness and fundraising to raise money for life-changing research into treatment and prevention of mental illness, as well as vital support services. “I’ll be walking to make a difference to the lives of people touched by mental illness and suicide.” Black Dog Institute statistics show one in five people experience mental health symptoms each year. Every day in Australia, eight people will die from suicide. Mental illness can be debilitating and can have a devastating impact on not only those living with it, but those around them. Ms White said she hoped to raise $500 but exceeding her goal would be “amazing”. She will reach 100 kilometres by walking around her neighbourhood and meet up with her sister at Lake Wendouree when restrictions allow.
