As the pandemic eases, pet therapy pooches are being allowed back into hospitals. And the patients are glad to see those “dogtors” back.
The 11 calming canines at Dignity Health – Northridge Hospital Medical Center returned last week to the floor the first time since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis.
The four-legged “physicians” provide pet therapy to patients, their families, and staff members.
The dogs, who have their own business cards, visit patients and staff to provide emotional and physiological support throughout the hospital.
“It’s amazing to witness the smiles on the faces of employees, patients, and visitors as they walk by a therapy dog,” says Becky Uzemeck, NHMC pet therapy volunteer. “They could be having a bad day or in a rush to get to where they are headed, and the sight of one of our dogs will stop them in their tracks.”
