A local fundraiser will walk 18 miles this weekend to help raise money for the Walk with William Trust, in honour of its founder, Yorkshire author William ‘Bill’ Forde MBE.
Clare Davies will walk from Mirfield, West Yorkshire to Haworth on Saturday, July 3.
Bill, the author of 60 published books and two musicals, is currently receiving end-of-life care after a long battle with Leukaemia and skin cancer, and Clare hopes to finish her journey on his doorstep.
Money raised by the challenge will be used to support the Walk with William Trust, a charitable fund set up by Bill to help finance the training of a guide dog puppy with Guide Dogs UK.
The puppy will be named after Bill in his honour and the cost of training the puppy to the point of placement with a blind owner is £35,000.
Speaking about setting up the fund, Bill said: “It is to my immeasurable pleasure to know that even before I die, that this trust fund has been established, and kick-started in advance; enabling all former friends who walked with me on my journey, to walk with other Williams during the years ahead.”
Clare said: “I’m going to be walking from Mirfield to Haworth as part of a wider ‘One Million Step Challenge’.
“I have three months, from July 1 – September 30, to walk one million steps, which equates to around 10,870 steps a day. I usually do this challenge for Diabetes UK because I am type one diabetic, however this year it is for the ‘Walk with William Tribute’ as Bill Forde is my best friend’s Dad.
“The cost of getting a fully trained puppy to a blind owner is approximately £35,000, and the fund’s initial goal is to reach £5,000, which can name a puppy after William and fund the first year of puppy training.
“Anyone can end up blind, and it is a fitting memory for Bill.
“As part of the challenge, I’ll be walking around Mirfield, my hometown and where Bill use to live and was a big part of the community.
“I’ll also be walking in other places in Kirklees and Haworth where Bill resides today.
“I want to walk to Haworth on Saturday because it kicks off the event, links Bill and myself, and want to do this walk while Bill is still with us.”
