Are Igloo Dog Houses The Warmest? 5 of the Best Reviewed

During the bitter winter months, it’s always better to be indoors with your dog and the rest of the family.  However, if that’s not possible you can always turn to the next best thing to keep Fido warm- an igloo house.

Igloo houses were designed by Canadian Inuit tribes to keep them safe and insulated them from the brutally cold Canadian winds. Traditional igloo houses have a rounded dome shape and elongated tunnel entrance that is very effective in keeping out the cold. This is the inspiration behind the igloo dog house which helps the dog to stay warm using its own body heat and prevents this heat from escaping courtesy of its insulated hard foam cover.

Getting the Size Right

While it’s important for your dog to stay warm, it’s equally vital that Fido fits into his kennel properly. Selecting the right size will help him benefit from his own body heat. If the doghouse is too big he won’t be warm enough. However, it must not be so small that it hampers movement while he’s inside. He should be able to stand up, turn, lie down and sleep with ease. Alternatively, if you live in an extremely cold area, you can consider getting a heater for the dog house or using a heated dog bed.

When getting an igloo dog house you should look out for the following features to ensure that it works effectively:

  • It should have a dome shape to slough off rain and snow.
  • The design should be stable to withstand extremely windy areas.
  • It should be made with heavy-duty foam to strengthen it and provide effective insulation both during cold and hot weather.
  • A raised floor with a provision for draining off water along the sides.
  • It should be easy to assemble.
  • Apart from being functional, it should also be an attractive addition to your backyard.

Igloo vs Wood Doghouse

The choice between getting a wooden doghouse or an igloo one can be tough since both have features that provide your dog with the comfort he needs. However, a number of elements set the igloo doghouse apart from other designs. The fact that they’re made from structural foam means they provide better insulation against both cold and heat than wooden structures. They are also built seamlessly with a specially made entrance so that there’s no room for water to seep in or gashing wind to find its way into the shelter. They’re also made from synthetic material which discourages moisture accumulation as well as the growth of mold, mildew or bacteria inside the dog house.

Apart from being warmer than wooden houses, they’re also cheaper to maintain which gives them a slight edge over wooden dog houses.

Some Dogs Shouldn’t be Left Out

Although igloo houses are designed to cope with freezing temperatures, you should allow your dog indoors when the winter gets severe. Certain types of dogs such as the smaller dog breeds, dogs with short coats and aging dogs- particularly those that are arthritic- can succumb to hypothermia if not closely monitored.

I May get one of these for my Labrador. He can be annoying if he is inside the house. Giving him his own space is a good idea.

joy says January 14, 2019

I once had the Indigo Igloo dog house for my pet. I thought the entrance tunnel was wrong. I was dead wrong. There’s no protection against the rain at the door. And while the “tunnel” is supposed to keep my dog warm, I found it did little to help keep my dog comfy. I’d still go for a wooden dog house with an offset door to the side complete with removable flaps for weather protection.

Henry says January 14, 2019

Well detailed article about igloo dogs. Choosing their hiuses needs one taking into consideration things like the shape which should be dome to slough off rain and snow and
the design should be stable to withstand extremely windy areas too.

Sindey Moreno says January 14, 2019

I love the Igloo house for dogs, I have been looking for a good bed for my pet since a while ago. This one looks efficient to keep it warm, and harder to destroy so it’s a perfect option for my dog.

David Mureithi says January 14, 2019

First saw the igloo houses in a BBC documentary. They are pretty simple to make if used to and they offer good warmth. It’s not a surprise seeing the idea on dog houses.
