New research has revealed that there’s one breed, in particular, that’s the most popular choice for birthday cards.
To celebrate National Pet Month – which is April – card company Thortful took a look at the search terms we are Googling the most when it comes to dog-themed occasion cards.
Labrador birthday cards enjoyed the biggest increase in search trends from 2019 to 2020, with a 181% growth year on year. The term ‘labrador birthday cards’ saw 4,340 in 2020, compared to just 1,540 the previous year.
Dachshund birthday cards went from 3,450 searches in 2019, to 5,230 last year, increasing by 52%, and pugs were also pretty popular, with 4,280 searches last year, up 25% from 3,420.
Other breeds people wanted to buy on birthday cards were border collies, bulldogs, cocker spaniels, jack russells, greyhounds, golden retrievers, staffies, beagles and of course, cockapoos.
But it’s not just birthday cards with canine characters people wanted to see -Thortful also discovered a higher demand for cards from the dog to mark key occasions during the pandemic like Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day.

Searches for ‘mothers day cards from the dog’ increased by 51% from 8,800 searches in 2020, to 13,290 last year. Meanwhile, ‘valentines day cards from the dog’ rose from 1,350 to 2,360, increasing by 75%.
Father’s Day cards from the dog saw the smallest increase, just two month’s into lockdown, from 22,420 to 23,330 – increasing by 4% on the previous year.
Christmas cards saw a change of 37%, with 23,010 Google searches in 2020.
