Stephanie Lane has a mantra: No dog left behind.
She believes every dog deserves an education and that with a little instruction they can navigate their way through life successfully without a leash.
“A dog who must be kept on a leash is no more than a slave,” she says.
Lane will offer another round of dog training classes specializing in off-leash obedience beginning Saturday, Aug. 28, in Hailey. Classes will be held 4 to 6 p.m. outdoors. Zoom sessions will also be offered from 3 to 5 p.m. online beginning Sunday, Aug. 29.
Lane’s Scotch Pines Dog Training relies on no food treats, shock collars, whistles or clickers.
“Your dog’s payment is your praise. They want you to be happy with them. You’re the trainer. I’m just here to help you,” she tells her students.
Lane sets dogs up to succeed, using hand signals and simple commands like sit and stay. But some of her students have gone on to teach their dogs more complicated maneuvers, such as having the dog pick up a soda out of a cooler and drop it in front of their owner.
“Your goal is a dog that’s free and obeys without correction—a no correction dog,” Lane says. “A dog you can take to your next barbecue, knowing it’s not going to scarf down a hamburger.”
