Sixteen police dog teams from Fort Knox, Louisville Metro Police Department and other parts of the state, took part last week in a four-day training on deploying dogs and police assets in high-risk situations.
For the seven military working dog teams from Fort Knox who participated, hosting the training event was a first and a big benefit to them, said Sgt. 1st Class Richard McNulty, kennel master at 905th Military Police Detachment.
“Our teams being exposed to this training has been a big help in growing them by leaps and bounds,” he said.
The course, led by instructors from High Drive K-9, based out of Greenville, South Carolina, was divided into three areas throughout the week: Assaults on vehicles, buildings and outside areas.
Lead instructor Scott Clark said the intent of the training is for teams to walk away from the scenario-driven course with more confidence in themselves and their dogs.
“It’s exciting to watch these guys and their dogs grow at their own pace,” Clark said. “We’re making sure we take care of them with honest and pure advice that’s practical and applicable in every format and has worked in thousands of deployments.”
