Buddy in Cruella
Buddy is introduced in Cruella’s opening few scenes as young Estella starts her trouble-filled time at school.
When young Estella starts school, she immediately finds herself at odds with a number of the boys there and gets involved in plenty of trouble and lots of fights.
One clash sees Estella thrown into a dumpster and it’s here where she finds a young puppy who has seemingly been abandoned.
Estella names her newfound friend Buddy and takes him home without her mother’s knowledge.
Buddy then stays with Estella/Cruella throughout the events of the film and becomes part of Jasper and Horace’s criminal gang Cruella joins up with the bumbling thieves, who have their own dog – a one-eyed Chihuahua named Wink.
What breed is Buddy in Cruella?
- Buddy’s exact breed in Cruella is not known.
As Baltimore Magazine points out, Buddy is a yellow terrier of an ‘indeterminate breed.’
The reason why Buddy’s breed is unknown is because the pooch that plays Buddy, a dog named Bobby, was a stray who was rescued by a charity from the streets of Cyprus and therefore the breeds of his parents are unknown.
After initially struggling to rehome Bobby, the Cypriot charity offered the then two-year-old Bobby to Julie Tottman, a Hollywood animal trainer who specialises in getting animals ready for appearances on the big screen.
As well as working with Bobby, whose appearance in Cruella is his first major role, Julie Tottman has also helped train animals for the likes of Harry Potter, James Bond, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and even 1996’s live-action adaptation of 101 Dalmatians.
Does Buddy die in Cruella? [Spoilers]
- No, Buddy does not die in Cruella.
Thankfully, none of the animals in Cruella, including Buddy the dog, are killed or harmed in the film.
There is a moment where Buddy’s fate is up in the air as the Baroness attempts to kill Cruella by burning down her warehouse apartment but luckily Mark Strong’s character, John, saves Cruella and her dog from the burning building.
Cruella is out now in cinemas and on Disney+ Premier Access after releasing on May 28th, 2021.
