A new candle brand in Manchester is creating candles inspired by dog breeds and their personalities- so dog owners can buy a candle to represent their own pet.
‘Good Girl’ launched their first batch of candles in April this year, with specially chosen scents to match every breeds individual characteristics.
Mancunian dog lover and founder of the brand is 29-year-old Alana Mustill. She was inspired by her Dachshund, Bow, to create something that dog lovers will enjoy and help appreciate their own breeds.
Alana said: “As a sausage dog owner I get a lot of gifts that have sausage dogs on, so I wanted to make a more ‘grown up’ gift for dog lovers.”
Alana is actually a full time Digital PR manager, but still manages to create her dog inspired candles as a side hustle at her home in Ancoats, Manchester.
‘Good Girl’ candles, which is named after Bow, represent a dog breed with a featured scent to match their personalities, and a label with bespoke words to match that breeds characteristics.
Their Frenchie candle is a best seller, labelled affectionate, intelligent, easy going and playful. Whereas the German shepherd is labelled curious, loyal courageous, confident and alert.
Alana has had lots of love for her unique candles. She’s even had customers who don’t own a dog.
She said: “I’ve had people who haven’t got a dog yet but this is their first steps to getting one. If anyone mentions a breed that we’ve not got, then when we release more, I try and include those breeds.
“It was hard at the beginning because there was a lot of trial and error and trying different fragrances. We wanted to match the scent based on the characteristics of the dog. For example pastoral dogs which were used for herding livestock, we’ve gone for a rosemary scent which smells a bit like fresh grass.”
Alana wanted to make her dog inspired candles, dog friendly by using essential oils deemed safe for dogs.
“I use paraben free fragrance oils so there isn’t as many nasties in them. I chose essential oils that are deemed safe for dogs, but one day I aim to use 100% essential oils.
“I hand pour them myself and design the labels and I try and make sure everything is sourced from the UK and from local businesses.
“I also try and make it sustainable by offering candle refills. I’ve got regular customers who have refills, otherwise it’s such a waste to throw glass away when they’re done.”
Its not only her dog loving customers that she creates candles for. In the pipelines, Alana is planning a rescue candles to donate her sales to Manchester Dogs Trust.
“The colour of the label will be blue as a sign for hope, and it might be a lavender scent which is a relaxing calm smell.”
‘Good Girl’ candles are only on sale on their website here.
